Protect the Arctic Refuge Forever!

President Bush and his allies in the last Congress tried repeatedly to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to massive oil development but we succeeded in blocking their attempted raids. Even with a new Congress in place, the White House can be counted on to continue threatening the Arctic Refuge, America’s greatest birthing ground for Arctic wildlife.. But Congress has the power to thwart those attacks and save the Arctic Refuge forever by designating it as wilderness. A bill (H.R. 39) has been introduced in the House of Representatives that would permanently protect the Arctic Refuge. Protect Our Parks in California!

One of California’s greatest state parks – San Onofre State Beach – is in danger of being paved over by a multi-lane highway. On February 23, 2006, an Orange County toll road agency voted to build a toll road through the middle of California’s fifth most popular state park – and set a terrible precedent for despoiling other state parks. More than 12,000 California activists have used the NRDC Action Fund web site to send a message urging the toll road agency to find alternative traffic solutions to the proposed highway. So far, the agency hasn’t responded. Stopping the toll road project is critical because our park lands are set aside for preservation, not development. NRDC and a coalition of environmental groups have already filed a lawsuit to save the park, and the State of California Attorney General has filed two additional suits. In addition, in February 2007, the California Assembly introduced a bill that prohibits road projects that encroach upon or impair the recreational value of state parklands. If the bill becomes law, it would protect San Onofre and other parklands across California from road developments. In the months to come, the NRDC Action Fund will continue fighting to save the park at San Onofre State Beach.
