Action Fund Update: Climate News and Commentary (7/28/10)

Here are a few, thought-provoking climate news articles and opinion pieces that caught our eye this morning. We don't necessarily agree with everything here - for instance, the crazy quote by David Koch - but we thought the articles were worth sharing.

Robert Redford: "It's the Opportunity, Stupid!"
I remember the last time our nation came this close to embracing clean energy -- back in the late 1970s. I hope my children don't have to wait another 35 years to seize the moment once again, because that moment, that opportunity might not be there.

Nate Silver: "Cap-and-Trade is Dead; Long Live Cap-and-Trade"
I'm fairly pessimistic about the world's ability to address the global warming issue in a serious way without having first risked catastrophe; the Copenhagen summit, for instance, was a disaster. But I'm less pessimistic about the United States' ability to pass cap-and-trade legislation at some point in the next 2-6 years -- even though Senate Democrats have given up on their legislation this year and even though Democrats will probably not again enjoy the majorities they had this session for the for the foreseeable future.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA): "Past Decade Warmest on Record According to Scientists"
The 2009 State of the Climate report released today draws on data for 10 key climate indicators that all point to the same finding: the scientific evidence that our world is warming is unmistakable. More than 300 scientists from 160 research groups in 48 countries contributed to the report, which confirms that the past decade was the warmest on record and that the Earth has been growing warmer over the last 50 years.

The Hill: "Sen. Murkowski may offer EPA rule delay to small-business bill"
Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee ranking member Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) may offer a plan from Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) to delay EPA regulations of greenhouse gases for power plants and refineries for two years as an amendment to a small-business package.

The Wonk Room (Think Progress): Billionaire Polluter David Koch: Global Warming Is Good For You
Koch says he’s not sure if global warming is caused by human activities, and at any rate, he sees the heating up of the planet as good news. Lengthened growing seasons in the northern hemisphere, he says, will make up for any trauma caused by the slow migration of people away from disappearing coastlines. “The Earth will be able to support enormously more people because a far greater land area will be available to produce food,” he says.

Think Progress: REPORT: The Politician Behind The Campaign To Repeal California's Clean Energy Law
In the California legislature, the loudest voice to kill the landmark clean energy climate change law AB32 has become Assemblyman Dan Logue (R-Chico). Described by Sacramento insiders as a "backbencher," Logue has built a powerful coalition of former tobacco lobbyists and Texan oil companies to orchestrate Prop 23, an initiative to essentially rescind AB 32. But who is Logue?
