Protect California's AB32 from Texas Oil Companies
Texas oil companies' dirty energy proposition pollutes and kills jobs.
The Dirty Energy Proposition, pushed by Texas-based Valero and Tesaro, would stall growth in California clean energy jobs -- one of the few bright spots in the state's recovering economy. Since 2005, California green jobs have grown 10 times faster than the statewide average and now total 500,000 employees. In addition, California last year received $2.1 billion in venture capital investment for the clean tech sector -- 60% of the total in North America. Repealing AB 32 would send a chilling message to investors here and could cause venture capital, as well as jobs, to flow to other states or countries. As if all that weren’t bad enough, the Dirty Energy Proposition also would delay improvements in California's air quality scheduled to occur under AB 32, resulting in more premature deaths, asthma attacks, and lost work days. In a state already challenged by some of nation's worst air pollution problems, Californians cannot afford these new assaults on their health and well-being. Perhaps worst of all, the oil companies supporting this ballot measure are hoping that if they can roll back climate and energy policies in California, they can block progress in other states and halt discussions of federal climate legislation in Congress.
