NRDC Action Fund Endorses McAuliffe for Governor of Virginia

WASHINGTON (June 17, 2021) – The NRDC Action Fund today announced the group’s first-ever gubernatorial endorsement, backing Terry McAuliffe (D) for governor and praising him for his pledge to continue making Virginia a clean energy leader among southern states. McAuliffe’s main general election opponent, Glenn Youngkin (R), has vowed to repeal recent legislation that will lower carbon emissions from Virginia’s power sector.

“If you care about Virginia’s economy, its future and all its citizens, the choice is crystal clear,” said Kevin S. Curtis, executive director of the NRDC Action Fund. “Virginia has quickly become a leader in clean energy, and Terry McAuliffe will double down on that success and build an economy that benefits all Virginians. Like Donald Trump, Glenn Youngkin and his allies in the fossil fuel industry want to reverse that progress and take Virginia backward, threatening the health and livelihoods of communities across the Commonwealth.”

“Clean energy is Virginia’s future — it’s our path to creating good jobs and protecting our environment, and I have a plan to get us there by 2035. Extreme Republicans like Glenn Youngkin have held Virginia back from addressing the threat of climate change for years, putting our economy and our communities at risk,” said Terry McAuliffe. “Now is the time to go big and bold and leverage federal dollars from the American Jobs Plan to move Virginia into a clean energy future. I am proud to have the endorsement of the NRDC Action Fund and look forward to working with them to move Virginia forward.”
