Senator Manchin and Republicans Block Essential Climate and Clean Energy Legislation

WASHINGTON (July 14, 2022) – According to media reports, Senator Joe Manchin has killed efforts to pass any reconciliation package that includes the clean energy and environmental justice investments essential to the fight against climate change.

Manish Bapna, president and CEO of the NRDC Action Fund, made the following statement:

“The House did its job. The Senate failed because Joe Manchin and the Republicans blocked Senate action. The consequences will be profound – at home and abroad.

“The climate crisis is inflicting rising costs and mounting dangers across this country and around the world. Seven in ten Americans expect our government to act. This was a squandered chance to respond with strategic investment to confront the climate crisis in a way that would strengthen the economy, create a more equitable society and make the country more secure.

“The Senate fell one vote short. That vote could have come from the lone Democratic hold out. It also could have come from any one of the 50 Republicans who refused to stand up for the climate action we so urgently need. Not a single Republican was willing to act. This failure falls squarely on Joe Manchin and the Republicans, as do the barren croplands, flooded homes, and incinerated communities that will result from this inaction. One of those Senators must reconsider.”
