WASHINGTON (October 25, 2023) – Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) was elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives today.

“Republicans have chosen a new speaker who helped lead the attempt to overturn the 2020 election and disenfranchise millions of voters. Someone who denies climate science, supports a national ban on abortion and wants to end marriage equality. Mike Johnson’s far-right political positions and embrace of conspiracy theories earned him the support of people like Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Green, but they put him well outside the American mainstream and will galvanize voters who reject MAGA extremism.”
