Trump to Announce Nomination for Supreme Court Seat

WASHINGTON (Sept. 26, 2020) – President Trump today is scheduled to announce his nomination to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by the recent death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Gina McCarthy, president and CEO of the NRDC Action Fund, made the following statement:

“The last thing we need is to rush a nominee to a lifetime seat on the highest court in the land in the heat of an ongoing election. Early voting has begun already in Illinois, Virginia, Michigan, New Jersey, Minnesota and elsewhere. Millions of ballots are already in the mail. Let the people vote and have their say.

“These are the rules the Senate Republicans set themselves in President Obama’s final year in office. They’re breaking those rules now, when it suits them – and while we’re standing in line to vote.

“There is too much at stake to rush ahead: Affordable health care – in a global pandemic. Civil rights – amid a national reckoning with racial injustice. The climate crisis – while fires rage to the West, and a record-setting hurricane season pummels the Gulf and East.

“It could even determine whether or not we have a fair outcome in the November election itself – as President Trump has said the Supreme Court may be the deciding voice in the election, and wants to stack the bench ahead of time to ensure he wins.

“All that’s on the ballot now. The election outcome should determine who fills this important seat. The people deserve to be heard.”
