WASHINGTON (September 22, 2015) – The following  is a statement by Susan Casey-Lefkowitz, senior adviser to the NRDC Action Fund, on the announcement today by presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton that she opposes the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline:

“She’s got this exactly right. We need to cut the fossil fuel pollution that’s driving climate change. The Keystone XL tar sands pipeline would take us in the wrong direction. We need to power our future with clean energy, not lock future generations into the dirty fuels of the past.

“Tar sands crude is about as dirty as it gets. We don’t need to pipe it through the breadbasket of America to be refined on our Gulf Coast mostly for shipment overseas.”

The NRDC Action Fund’s mission is to build political support in the United States for protecting the planet and its people.  We mobilize influential constituencies, experts, community leaders and others to directly advocate for clean air and water, public health, biodiversity, and a stable climate. We support candidates who stand up for environmental protection, and we expose those who side with polluters rather than the public good.
