Washington, DC – Today, NRDC Action Fund and Sierra Club launched a multi-state, six figure online ad campaign aimed at highlighting the Obama Administration’s new fuel efficiency standards and asking consumers to call the Administration to urge them to finalize strong fuel efficiency and pollution standards this summer. The new standards will result in significant cost savings for consumers at the pump, dramatically reduce oil consumption, cut pollution, and create jobs.
The ads will run in Colorado, Nevada, Ohio, and Virginia, and will emphasize the fuel standards that will yield double miles per gallon for American consumers.
“The Obama administration really came through for the economy, the climate, and every American’s wallet by raising fuel efficiency,” said Michael Brune, Sierra Club Executive Director. “Cleaner cars and trucks will drive innovation and return the American auto industry to its place as the global leader. This is visionary leadership and a vision shared across the board by car makers, autoworkers, environmentalists and the American public.”
Thanks to the new fuel standards, consumers will save an estimated $1.7 trillion in real fuel costs over the life of their vehicles. The standards also give automakers the certainty they need to plan ahead in a world of very volatile oil prices, and encourage automakers to invest in fuel efficiency technologies and create new green jobs.
“Doubling fuel efficiency will cut in half the gas bill we all pay and the amount of oil we burn in our cars,” said Peter Lehner, NRDC Action Fund Executive Director. “That’s great news for jobs, consumer pocketbooks and clean air. We hope these ads will help convince the few remaining skeptics to stop looking this gift horse in the mouth.”
